Bikeland Sponsors Village Challenge April 14th

Families, groups and individuals—from the stroller set to serious cyclists—are gearing up for the Feed the Dragon Village Challenge. Entrants will bike, skate, jog or stroll to The Woodlands Earth Day at The Woodlands High School
on Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The friendly competition among villages in The Woodlands spotlights the festival theme, Be A Climate Action Hero, by challenging attendees to use alternative forms of transportation to reach the event. Sponsored by Bikeland, over $1, 500 of prizes—bicycles, BOB Revolution jogging stroller, helmets, gift certificates and other prizes—will be awarded to participants.

Jeff Chaffin, owner of Bikeland, and Sue Griffis, board member of The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., show off prizes to be awarded in the Feed the Dragon Village Challenge at The Woodlands Earth Day Festival on April 14.

Jeff Chaffin, competitive cyclist and owner of Bikeland, is enthusiastic about this year’s Challenge. “People are getting more health conscious. Biking saves gas and is great exercise for the whole family!” he said. “With miles of paved hike and bike paths, The Woodlands is one the safest places in Houston to ride bikes.” Mr. Chaffin will be on hand at Earth Day along with members of Bikeland’s MS-150 team, who are already in training for the two-day cycling adventure that raises funds for multiple sclerosis. Challenge participants who stop by Bikeland’s yellow and white tent can air up tires and receive a quick bicycle checkup.

The winning village will receive a donation to their scholarship fund and possession of the coveted dragon trophy. Those living in far-flung areas can participate by parking their vehicle at two centralized locations and walking or biking part of the way. Points will be awarded on the basis of village population and distance traveled using alternative means. To view a map of gathering sites, or for more information about the Feed the Dragon Village Challenge, check the Community Associations of The Woodlands Web site at www.thewoodlandsassociations.org/environment, click on the Earth Day link and select Village Challenge. Organized by Community Associations of The Woodlands, The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. and Conroe Independent School District, The Woodlands Earth Day Festival is will be held on Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Woodlands High School.

Ghorba Big ChainRing Challenge and Mountain Bike Skills Clinic:

The Race to Build Trails
Welcome to the 2007 GHORBA Big Ring Challenge, presented by Bike Land taking place on May 5th and 6th. This event promises to be better than ever. This is the 6th Race of the 2007 Billy Kurtz State Farm Agent Texas Mountain Bike State Championship Series and the 6th time GHORBA is hosting the race.

The race takes place in the beautiful Sam Houston National Forest, at the Double Lake Recreational Area

We have two slogans this year:
The Race to Build Trails and Shop Local. As you might be aware, GHORBA is a 501.3c non-profit Trail Advocacy group (among other things) and all the money we gather goes back to building a strong mountain biking community and new multi-use trails. Our member-volunteers don’t get paid to put on this event!

In effort to support our AWESOME Local Bike Shop sponsors, we want to highlight the need to Shop Local as much as possible. Remeber that GHORBA members enjoy 10 to 15% discounts with id's at almost 20 Houston-area
bike shops!

Race Venue & Course
As you might know, Double Lake (affectionately known as Lake Lake) is one of the “best beginner courses in the State and certainly as part of the TMBRA race series. The experts love it for its outright speed.

Double Lake has the other distinct advantage of being the only course in the area which has excellent soil and drainage. This means you can literally ride a day or even hours after it has rained without fear of damaging the course.

This year we are preparing additional +1 miles of trail. If all plans go right by working with the Houston Sierra Club, Lone Star Hiking Trail, US Forest Service, IMBA and Talon Trails, we’ll have the extra trail ready by race day.

Camping
We have tent camping group spots available for only $10 per car per night, all near the lodge. Reserve yours via the pre-registration site if you want a group spot. This guarantees you a tent and parking spot close to the race starting area.

You can also reserve individual camping spots directly. Visit Recreation.gov and book it yourself. Note: The park entry fee is separate from campsite fees and is payable at entry.

Mechanic Tips of the Trade

Ready to make an improvement in performance on your bicycle without buying a new one and not sure how to go about it? Owner Jeff Chaffin has a great tip to share with you:

8 Ways to Lighten Your Bike
and make you faster

Easy tricks to drop weight from your riding machine.

SWITCH TIRES
"Most bikes have steel-beaded tires. If you change to a Kevlar-beaded tire, that makes a huge difference because you're changing rotational weight. It is also the least expensive upgrade." Continental GP4000, Vittoria EVOCX or Vredestein Fortezza Tri comps.

YOU CARRY IT

"Strip your bike down to the bare minimums. Shave off extras. There's no need for a huge survival bag, aero bars, three bottle racks and a CamelBak."

REPLACE YOUR FORK

"Most carbon forks have steel steere tubes, you can shave up to one pound just by replacing with a fork with a carbon steerer."

REPLACE YOUR STEM

"I've seen some people's bikes with heavy steel and alloy stems, replace with light weight carbon stems such as Easton's ec70 or ec90 "

DITCH THE STEEL BAR

"A lot of bikes under $300 have handlebars made of steel. Changing to aluminum, carbon fiber or titanium would be ounces, but it makes a noticeable difference." Specialized S-Works bars or Easton ec90 bars

SLIP IN NEW TUBES

"Get the ultra-light inner tubes. I used one of the lightest tubes you can get and I didn't have a flat for over a year. "

REPLACE THE SADDLE

"Most bikes come with seats that have steel rails. You can get seats that are titanium-railed, carbon-fiber-rimmed or a lighter steel. All of those weigh less." The Specialized Toupe saddle is only 160 grams!

REPLACE YOUR WHEELS

"The lighter the wheelset, the less rotational weight you have to push around with each stroke. You can shave up to a pound just by changing your wheel set not to mention the increased ride quality. You might consider a tubular wheelset for an unforgettable ride or a pair of Mavic or Easton wheels.

You can get all of these handy items at Bikeland.
